Egypt Daily News – The German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced the closure of three Iranian consulates in Germany located in Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich following the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a dual German-Iranian national.
This action comes as a response to what Germany describes as the “murder” of Sharmahd, which has severely strained diplomatic relations between Germany and Iran.
Baerbock indicated that Germany would pursue EU-wide sanctions against those responsible for Sharmahd’s execution.
Prior to this announcement, Germany’s ambassador to Iran, Markus Potzel, had departed Iran for consultations in Berlin to protest against the execution.
The Iranian judiciary had executed Sharmahd following a controversial trial that resulted in a death sentence on terrorism charges in 2023. Germany, alongside Sharmahd’s family and human rights advocates, has vehemently rejected the allegations made against him.
