Egypt Daily News – The German police reported that a car collided with a group of people in the city of Munich. The police in the southern German city stated on Thursday, February 13, 2025, in a post on the platform “X” that “a number of people were injured” after “a car ran over a group of people” in the center of the capital of Bavaria in southern Germany.
The police stated on the social media platform X that they had managed to detain the driver and do not believe he poses any further threat.
Initially, the German newspaper Bild reported that 15 people were injured in the hit-and-run incident.
Later, Bernard Bischke, a spokesperson for the local fire department, told AFP that “there are currently 20 injured, some in critical condition and some facing life-threatening injuries.”
Subsequently, a spokesperson for the German police stated that the suspect is a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker. The source added that at least 28 people were injured in the incident, which occurred just ten days before a scheduled general election in Germany, where the issues of migration and asylum are at the forefront of candidates’ campaigns.
German authorities suspect that the driver may have acted intentionally. Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria and leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), told reporters at the scene, “It appears to be a potential attack.”
In a post on platform X, Söder wrote, “This is a terrible and deeply painful event. A serious attack has occurred in Munich. An Afghan citizen drove his car into a crowd of people, injuring many, some of whom are in critical condition.”
The Mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, stated that he was “deeply shocked” by the incident, adding that children were among the injured.
German radio Bayerischer Rundfunk reported that the injured individuals were apparently participating in a strike, as there was a demonstration linked to a strike organized by the Verdi union at the time of the incident.
This incident comes on the eve of the city hosting the Munich Security Conference, which typically attracts prominent global figures.
On his part, Bavaria’s Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, stated that the motives of the Afghan suspect remain unclear. The politician from the Christian Social Union (CSU) added that there is currently no evidence linking the incident to the security conference.
Herrmann further mentioned that the young Afghan man was known to the police for shoplifting and violations of drug laws.
