Egypt Daily News – Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid on Tuesday proposed that Egypt take over the administration of the Gaza Strip for at least eight years after the war, with the possibility of extending it to 15 years. Under the proposal, Egypt’s foreign debt would be paid off by the international community. The plan also includes the formation of an international “peace force” to rebuild Gaza.
Speaking at a forum at a Washington research center on Tuesday, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid proposed that Egypt take over the administration of the Gaza Strip for at least the next eight years after the end of the war between Israel and Hamas, in exchange for the international community covering Egypt’s foreign debt.
The former Israeli prime minister stated, “The solution is for Egypt to take responsibility for administering the Gaza Strip for eight years, with the option to extend it to 15 years.” He added, “At the same time, Egypt’s foreign debt will be paid off by the international community and regional allies.”
Lapid’s proposal includes Egypt leading a “peace force” involving the international community and Gulf states to “manage and rebuild” the war-ravaged enclave, which has suffered over 15 months of conflict since Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
He further stated, “During this period, conditions for self-governance will be established, and Gaza will be completely demilitarized.”
