Transportation infrastructure gets a multi-billion funding package in cooperation with international partners

Egypt Daily News – Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, stated that the government continues its efforts to enhance sustainable transport projects. An agreement has been reached on a multi-billion funding package in cooperation with international development partners to develop transportation infrastructure in line with the state’s sustainable development plans.

Targeted Transport Projects

During his speech at the opening session of the Ministry of Planning’s conference to launch the second monitoring report of the “Noffi” platform program, the minister explained that the targeted projects include:

  • Extension of Cairo Metro Line 1 from New Marg to the 10th of Ramadan City, with a total cost of €1.5 billion. The funding contributions include €750 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB), €250 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), €250 million from the French Development Agency (AFD), and a local component of €250 million.
  • Development of the Abu Qir railway line in Alexandria and its conversion into an electric metro (Phase 3), with a total cost of €2 billion. The funding includes €750 million from EIB, €200 million from EBRD, €200 million from AFD, €150 million from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and a local component of €220 million.
  • Development of the Ferdin – Upper Egypt railway line, with a total cost of €500 million, including €250 million from EIB and a €250 million local component.

Strengthening the Transport Network

The minister emphasized that these projects are part of the state’s plan to enhance the transport network, reduce carbon emissions, and improve public transportation, aligning with sustainability goals while providing modern and safe transportation for citizens.

He noted that in 2025, the ministry will continue conducting studies on future sustainable transport projects under the “Noffi” program, focusing on maximizing the local component and strengthening cooperation with international partners to support Egypt’s smart transport system.

The minister concluded by affirming that these projects will bring a significant transformation to the transport sector, reiterating the government’s commitment to implementing developmental plans that align with global sustainability trends.
