Egypt, Norway Hold Talks on Gaza, Sudan, Horn of Africa and Ukraine

Ahmed Kamel – Egypt Daily News

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, held a telephone conversation on Saturday, 27 December 2025, with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide to discuss a range of regional developments and international crises, reflecting growing diplomatic coordination between Cairo and Oslo.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the talks focused primarily on the situation in the Gaza Strip, amid ongoing international efforts to stabilize the fragile ceasefire. Abdelatty stressed the importance of unified global action to ensure the consolidation of the ceasefire agreement and to move forward with arrangements for the second phase of the plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. He reaffirmed Egypt’s firm rejection of any measures that could undermine the unity of Palestinian territory or impose new realities on the ground in the West Bank.

In this context, the Egyptian foreign minister strongly condemned the continued expansion of Israeli settlements, warning of the risks posed by escalating tensions and settler attacks against Palestinian civilians. He called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in halting such practices and preventing further deterioration. Abdelatty also emphasized the urgent need to guarantee unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza, while creating the conditions necessary to launch early recovery efforts and begin reconstruction. He praised Norway’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and its backing of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The conversation also addressed the worsening situation in Sudan. Abdelatty briefed his Norwegian counterpart on Egypt’s diplomatic efforts within the Quartet framework to push toward a comprehensive ceasefire. He reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and stability, stressing the importance of preserving state institutions amid the conflict. He further underscored the need for the international community to fulfill its humanitarian obligations by ensuring the availability of safe havens and sufficient humanitarian corridors to allow aid to reach civilians without obstruction.

Turning to the Horn of Africa, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia and its legitimate institutions. He rejected any unilateral actions that could infringe on Somali sovereignty and condemned attempts to impose parallel entities that threaten the cohesion of the Somali state. He also expressed Egypt’s categorical rejection of violations of established principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. Both ministers agreed that respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity remains a cornerstone of international stability.

The call concluded with a discussion of the war in Ukraine, with Abdelatty and Eide agreeing on the necessity of pursuing a peaceful and diplomatic settlement to the crisis, one that would contribute to regional and global security.

The exchange underscored Egypt and Norway’s shared emphasis on de-escalation, humanitarian protection and adherence to international law at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
