In a groundbreaking development, Egypt will host an official meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) in Cairo from September 1 to 3, 2025, marking the first time the G20 will convene outside its member states since its establishment in 1999. This historic gathering underscores Egypt’s growing influence on the global stage and its important role in shaping international discussions.

Ambassador Ragy El-Etreby, the personal representative of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to the G20 and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the significance of this event. He explained that this meeting is the culmination of Egypt’s distinguished participation as a guest country at G20 meetings for the third consecutive year and the fifth time overall.

The invitation to host the official G20 meeting reflects Egypt’s regional weight and its substantial contributions to global dialogues, particularly its advocacy for developing nations and its active role in multilateral negotiations.

The event also serves as a recognition of Egypt’s commitment to addressing pressing global issues, with a particular focus on the challenges facing developing and African countries. Egypt has consistently championed the concerns of these nations, ensuring their voices are heard in various international and regional forums.

El-Etreby further elaborated that the upcoming G20 meeting would be held in coordination with the South African presidency of the G20 for this year. A key topic on the agenda will be the growing challenge of food security, a critical issue impacting many nations worldwide. The discussions will focus on the multifaceted aspects of food security, with participation from a wide range of G20 member countries, guest countries, and international organizations, including financial institutions.

The G20 meeting in Cairo represents a significant milestone for Egypt, both as a key regional player and as a nation striving to elevate the concerns of developing countries on the global stage. It also highlights Egypt’s commitment to fostering international cooperation, particularly in addressing issues that transcend borders, such as food security, which affects millions of people across the globe.

This development is expected to further solidify Egypt’s diplomatic stature and reinforce its role in shaping the future of global governance, particularly in areas that require collaborative action and shared responsibility. As Egypt prepares to host the G20, the country is poised to continue its efforts in driving meaningful dialogue and solutions to some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
