Egypt Daily News – Ukraine said on Monday that it wants an immediate ceasefire with Russia “for at least 30 days,” while Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a three-day truce from May 8 through the end of May 10.
Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha wrote on X, “If Russia truly wants peace, it must cease fire immediately. Why wait until May 8?” He called for a ceasefire “of at least 30 days.”
Meanwhile, the White House confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump wants a “permanent” ceasefire in Ukraine, not just a temporary truce like the one Putin proposed. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated, “The President has made it clear he wants a permanent ceasefire.”
She also noted that Trump is increasingly frustrated with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stressing that ending the war requires both leaders to sit down for negotiations. “While he remains optimistic about a potential agreement, he is also realistic—both presidents must come to the negotiating table to end this.”
Earlier in the day, Putin announced the three-day ceasefire to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union and its allies’ victory in World War II. The Kremlin said, “From a humanitarian standpoint, the Russian side declares a truce during the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.” It added that all combat operations would halt from May 8 to 10 and called on Ukraine to do the same, warning that if Ukraine violates the truce, Russian forces will respond “appropriately and effectively.”
Russia had previously declared a similar 30-hour truce during Easter, and while both sides reported a decrease in fighting, they also accused each other of committing hundreds of violations.
Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January marked a turning point in the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Since then, the U.S.—Ukraine’s main supporter—has been pushing to end the war as quickly as possible. Trump has been intensifying efforts to reach a peace agreement.
Until recently, Putin had refused to accept a full and unconditional ceasefire, tying it to halting Western arms shipments to Ukraine and Ukraine’s ongoing military mobilization.
