Egypt Daily News – Egypt has doubled its electricity supply to Jordan, reaching 400 megawatts per day during the current week, compared to between 100 and 200 megawatts before the outbreak of the war between Israel and Iran, according to three sources, two of which are government officials.

This comes after Egypt began supplying natural gas to Jordan at a rate of 100 million cubic feet per day to operate power plants, following the disruption of supplies from Israel due to the conflict between Israel and Iran.

One source said that the capacity provided to Jordan is mainly during peak and nighttime hours, noting ongoing Egyptian-Jordanian coordination to secure electricity and gas needs for the neighboring country.

Egypt is preparing to launch a new tender to select a global consultant responsible for upgrading the efficiency of the electricity interconnection line with Jordan to reach 2,000 megawatts. This was revealed by a government official a few days ago. The project aims to implement a plan to triple capacity in two phases, compared to the current capacity of 550 megawatts, which is exchanged through a 400-kilovolt submarine cable implemented in 1999.

At the same time, Egypt seeks to enhance interconnection capacities with neighboring countries. It is currently executing a major project to link with Saudi Arabia, with a completion rate of 76.9% as of May 2025. The capacity of the first phase for power exchange reaches 1,500 megawatts, and the second phase will reach 3,000 megawatts.
