70 Killed in Gaza

Ahmed Kamel – Egypt Daily News

At least 61 Palestinians were killed on Wednesday by Israeli military fire in the Gaza Strip, according to local health authorities. Among the dead were 40 civilians who were reportedly attempting to access humanitarian aid when they were shot.

The incident marks one of the deadliest in recent weeks, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deteriorate under the weight of ongoing Israeli military operations and an almost total blockade of the enclave. Eyewitnesses and medical personnel in northern Gaza said crowds had gathered near aid distribution points when Israeli forces opened fire.

Local authorities and international humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned of the growing desperation among civilians in Gaza, where food, clean water, and medicine are increasingly scarce. With formal aid corridors severely restricted and many delivery operations halted due to security concerns, residents have been left to risk their lives in search of basic necessities.

The Israeli military has not issued an immediate statement regarding the incident, though similar episodes in the past have been justified as security measures or part of ongoing combat operations against Hamas. Human rights groups, however, have raised alarm over repeated incidents in which civilians have been targeted or caught in the crossfire while trying to obtain humanitarian assistance.

Wednesday’s fatalities add to the rising death toll in the conflict, which has now claimed tens of thousands of lives, many of them civilians. The United Nations and several humanitarian agencies have called for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded access for aid convoys to prevent further catastrophe.

International pressure is mounting on both Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire agreement, particularly as famine-like conditions begin to emerge in parts of the Gaza Strip. Talks mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are ongoing but have so far failed to yield a durable truce.
