President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call today from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, during which the two leaders discussed recent developments in the Gaza Strip and explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Malaysia.
According to Presidential Spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, Prime Minister Ibrahim opened the call by congratulating President El-Sisi on Egypt’s successful diplomatic efforts, which helped broker a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza conflict. The Malaysian leader praised Egypt’s pivotal and historic role in hosting and organizing the recent Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, describing it as a significant achievement with both regional and international impact.
Prime Minister Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia’s full support for Egypt’s ongoing initiatives to end the war and restore stability in the region.
Gaza Ceasefire and Regional Coordination
During the call, President El-Sisi reviewed the outcomes of the Sharm El-Sheikh summit and Egypt’s coordination with international mediators to implement the first phase of the ceasefire plan introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump. President El-Sisi underscored the urgency of consolidating the current momentum into a serious political track aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state based on internationally recognized parameters, ensuring a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
The Egyptian president also expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s long-standing and principled support for the Palestinian cause, noting the strong alignment of views between Cairo and Kuala Lumpur on the need to seize the current moment for political progress.
Egypt to Host International Reconstruction Conference
President El-Sisi informed the Malaysian prime minister of Egypt’s intention to host an international conference focused on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza. He welcomed Malaysia’s engagement in this effort and emphasized the importance of close coordination between both nations in delivering humanitarian aid and development support to the Palestinian people.
Prime Minister Ibrahim responded positively to the initiative, confirming Malaysia’s participation in the upcoming conference. He also expressed his country’s readiness to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza in full coordination with the Egyptian authorities.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Beyond the situation in Gaza, the leaders discussed enhancing bilateral relations across a range of strategic sectors. President El-Sisi expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Ibrahim’s visit to Cairo in November 2024, describing it as a turning point in Egypt-Malaysia relations.
Both sides agreed on the importance of implementing the outcomes of that visit and broadening cooperation in key areas such as energy, industry, tourism, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and entrepreneurship. They also highlighted the need to foster stronger linkages between the private sectors of both countries.
The call concluded with a mutual affirmation of the two leaders’ commitment to continued coordination and consultation on regional and global issues. They emphasized the shared goal of promoting security, stability, and sustainable development in both the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
