President El-Sisi Follows up on Strategic Pillars for Developing Egypt’s Telecommunications Industry

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Amr Talaat, Presidential Advisor for Financial Affairs Lieutenant General Ahmed El-Shazly, Head of the Armed Forces Financial Affairs Authority Major General Khaled Ahmed Abdullah, Director of the Armed Forces Signal Department Major General Hani Mahmoud Mansour, and Executive President of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) Eng. Mohamed Shamroukh.

Spokesman for the Presidency Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy stated that President El-Sisi followed up on the strategic pillars for developing the telecommunications industry in Egypt and efforts to bolster the knowledge-based economy. In this context, the Minister of Communications reviewed a package of recently launched services,  most notably the 5G Mobile Services which represents a qualitative leap in telecommunications and enhancing network quality and speeds across various regions, as well as the WiFi Calling which has successfully improved call quality, particularly in areas with weak or no coverage. In addition to the opening of the NTRA’s Radio Spectrum Monitoring Center, which is considered a qualitative addition to the national infrastructure for managing and monitoring the radio spectrum using the latest wireless monitoring systems, including fixed and mobile stations to measure spectrum occupancy with high precision.

The President was briefed on the plan to support and continue the development of mobile networks in Egypt, including internet coverage and other mobile services across all cities, villages, and underserved areas. Dr. Talaat emphasized that the telecommunications sector has transformed into a productive service sector, effectively contributing to economic growth and sustainable development. He explained that the sector has achieved the highest growth rates nationwide for the seventh consecutive year (between 14% – 16%), with its contribution to the GDP rising to approximately 6%.

The meeting also touched on the executive status of digital infrastructure development projects nationwide. This includes the national plan to replace the copper network with fiber optic cables and the expansion of mobile tower construction to comprehensively improve service levels. Dr. Talaat expressed his confidence in the pivotal role played by private sector companies as a fundamental pillar in implementing the sector’s plans.

President El-Sisi stressed the importance of opening new prospects for the telecommunications industry and of addressing challenges related to local manufacturing. The President gave directives to study opportunities to develop data centers and cloud computing services, the expansion of local manufacturing of telecommunications devices, and the establishment of effective mechanisms to support and encourage local products.
