Explosions were heard in northern Israel on Saturday after missiles were launched from Iran, according to Israeli military officials, in a sharp escalation of the fast-moving regional confrontation.
The Israeli army said air raid sirens were activated across multiple parts of the country after incoming missiles were detected. Residents in the Haifa area reported loud blasts as air defense systems moved to intercept the projectiles, Israeli news outlet Ynet reported.
There was no immediate official confirmation of casualties.
The missile launches came hours after Israel carried out strikes against Iranian targets under the operation name “Lion’s Roar,” prompting Tehran to vow retaliation. Israeli authorities declared a “special and immediate” state of emergency nationwide following the attack.
The latest exchange follows the announcement by US President Donald Trump that Washington had begun what he described as “major combat operations” in Iran, saying the campaign was intended to defend the American people by eliminating what he called imminent threats from the Iranian regime.
The rapid sequence of strikes and counterstrikes has raised fears of a broader regional conflict, with both Israel and Iran signaling readiness for further escalation.
