The Grand Egyptian Museum has been selected by TIME magazine as one of the World’s Greatest Places for 2026, reinforcing its status as a major global cultural landmark and a cornerstone of Egypt’s tourism strategy.

In its annual list, TIME highlighted the museum’s exceptional collections and immersive design, describing it as a powerful showcase of the richness and continuity of ancient Egyptian civilization over thousands of years. The recognition follows the museum’s official opening and places it among the most important new cultural destinations worldwide.

Situated on the Giza Plateau with direct views of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum spans more than five million square feet, making it the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. It houses over 100,000 artifacts, many of which are being displayed publicly for the first time.

A key highlight is the full collection of Tutankhamun, with all 5,000 artifacts from his tomb exhibited together in one place for the first time in history. This comprehensive display offers visitors a rare and complete insight into the life and legacy of one of ancient Egypt’s most famous rulers.

The museum experience begins in the grand atrium, where visitors are greeted by a monumental statue of Ramesses II. The building’s modern architectural design features a transparent façade and a sweeping grand staircase that visually connects the museum with the surrounding landscape, blending contemporary structure with ancient heritage.

Beyond its scale and design, the museum represents a significant advancement in artifact preservation. Its galleries are equipped with state-of-the-art climate control systems to ensure the long-term protection of priceless antiquities, aligning with the highest international standards in conservation.

The recognition comes at a time of strong growth in Egypt’s tourism sector, which recorded more than 19 million visitors in 2025. The Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to play a central role in the country’s ambition to attract 30 million tourists annually by 2030, offering a unique opportunity to explore some of the world’s most iconic antiquities where they were created.
