Egypt Daily News – The German Parliament decided, on Monday, to withdraw confidence from Chancellor Olaf Scholz, paving the way for new elections on February 23.

Parliament Speaker Purple Bass (belonging to Schulz’s Social Democratic Party) announced that 207 deputies voted in favor of Schulz, while 394 deputies voted against him, and 116 deputies abstained from voting.

Thus, the Chancellor was unable, as expected, to achieve the necessary majority of at least 367 deputies.

Schulz will now head to the Presidential Palace (Bellevue) to propose to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier the dissolution of Parliament.

The president will have 21 days to decide whether to approve Schulz’s proposal and set a date for new elections within 60 days.

The German President’s approval of the German Chancellor’s proposal is considered certain, given the existence of a broad consensus within Parliament regarding early parliamentary elections, which were originally scheduled to be held on September 28, 2025.
