Egypt Daily News – The administration of US President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that the United States wants to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement for the second time, in rejection of international efforts to combat climate warming as weather disasters multiply in the world.

The White House said in a statement shortly after Trump was sworn in, “President Trump will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement” and explained that the withdrawal request should be submitted to the United Nations, and it will take effect after one year.

This means that the United States will largely withdraw from the international community’s fight against global warming.

Trump described the agreement as a disaster and a fraud on the United States.

The statement said that Trump’s goal is to end the “climate extremism” pursued by his predecessor, Joe Biden. Trump claims that global warming does not exist, and has repeatedly called climate change a “hoax.”

It is noteworthy that the Paris Climate Change Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius compared to the period before the industrial revolution, and ideally to one and a half degrees (1.5 degrees) only.

This goal was agreed at the UN Climate Summit in Paris in 2015 and has since been reaffirmed at several climate conferences. The intention is to avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis, such as frequent and severe heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, storms and floods.

US President-elect, Donald Trump, announced in his inauguration speech, “The golden era of America begins now, and starting from today everyone will respect our country, and we will not allow anyone to exploit it,” adding, “I survived the assassination to save America.”

He stressed that “America will regain its position as the largest nation,” warning that “no party will be able to intimidate us.”

Trump said in his inauguration speech: “I return to the presidency confident and optimistic that we are at the beginning of an exciting new era of success for our nation. A wave of change is sweeping the country. My message to Americans today is that it is time for us to work again with courage, strength, and vitality for the greatest civilization in history.”

He continued: “I will fight and win for the Americans,” hinting that the American people had their say in the elections and supported their agenda. Trump added: “We will not allow negligence and corruption in the government apparatus,” referring to the Los Angeles fire disaster.

He continued: “We will preserve our sovereignty, security will return, and the exploitation of the Ministry of Justice as a political weapon will end.”

Trump declared that his legacy would be “peace making,” but he threatened to “restore the Panama Canal,” which he considered that “America had given up in a ridiculous way.”
