Egypt Daily News – Hamas will not participate in Gaza governance

Egyptian state media reported on Saturday, citing an informed Egyptian source involved in the ceasefire negotiations, that Hamas has confirmed it will not participate in governing the Gaza Strip in the next phase.

The source told Al-Qahera Al-Ikhbariya, a government-affiliated news outlet, that Egypt is engaged in intensive discussions to form a temporary committee to oversee humanitarian relief and the reconstruction of Gaza.

The source also stated that Hamas remains committed to the three-phase ceasefire agreement.

Egypt is working on an alternative proposal to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan, which suggested U.S. administration of Gaza and the resettlement of its population in Egypt and Jordan for investment projects.

According to three Egyptian security sources cited by Reuters, the Egyptian proposal involves forming a Palestinian committee to govern Gaza without Hamas’s participation, international cooperation for reconstruction without displacing Palestinians, and progressing toward a two-state solution.

An Arab government source revealed that representatives from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, and Palestine will review and discuss the plan in Riyadh before presenting it at the Arab Summit scheduled for February 27.

Additionally, two Egyptian security sources reported on Wednesday that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi would not travel to Washington for White House talks if the agenda included Trump’s plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza.

President Sisi had previously rejected Trump’s proposal for U.S. administration of Gaza after Israel’s withdrawal and the creation of a “Middle East Riviera” following the relocation of Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan.
