Egypt Daily News – All 14 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza, but the United States objected. The U.S. used its veto power to block a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The United States had informed Israel that it would veto the draft resolution, which was scheduled for a vote at the UN Security Council on Wednesday, according to the American website Axios, citing Israeli officials.
The vote was part of international efforts to pressure Israel to agree to a ceasefire and to allow humanitarian aid to reach the Gaza Strip.
The U.S. has consistently expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself but has also called for efforts to minimize civilian casualties and increase humanitarian assistance to Gaza. This veto marks the third time the U.S. has blocked a ceasefire resolution at the UN during the current conflict.
The proposed resolution was introduced by Algeria and received backing from countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe. The draft emphasized the urgent need to protect civilians and called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, especially amid worsening conditions in Gaza and rising international concern over a possible Israeli ground offensive in Rafah.
The U.S. has instead supported a different diplomatic approach through bilateral and regional negotiations, backing a ceasefire proposal mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. itself, which includes the release of hostages held by Hamas and a phased truce.
