U.S. President Donald Trump called on Hamas on Wednesday to immediately release all the hostages it is holding in Gaza, stating that doing so would swiftly change the course of events and bring the conflict to an end.
Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated:
“Tell Hamas to immediately release all twenty hostages (not 2, not 5, not 7!), and then things will change quickly. It will be over!”
Trump’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire and hostage deal in the war between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack inside Israeli territory. The conflict has since resulted in widespread destruction in Gaza and mounting international concern over the humanitarian crisis.
Earlier this week, in an interview with The Daily Caller, Trump also expressed the view that the war in Gaza should come to an end, arguing that it is ultimately harming Israel, both strategically and in terms of global public opinion.
“This war has to stop, because it’s hurting Israel,” he said, adding: “Even though Israel may win militarily, it’s losing the battle for public opinion, and that’s very damaging.”
Reflecting on the evolution of U.S. political dynamics, Trump noted that the pro-Israel lobby no longer holds the influence in Congress it once did. “Twenty years ago, Israel had the most powerful lobby I have ever seen. No politician could voice even the slightest criticism. Today, this is no longer the case.”
President Trump also reiterated how deeply affected he was by the events of October 7, stating: “It was a horrific day. I saw the images myself.”
The president’s comments reflect a notable shift in rhetoric from a key figure who has long been known for his strong pro-Israel stance. His administration brokered the Abraham Accords, normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab states. However, Trump’s recent remarks signal concern over the long-term political and reputational costs of Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
