Renowned Egyptian actor and theater director Mohamed Sobhi was hospitalized on Friday after suffering a sudden heart attack, prompting widespread concern among his fans and the artistic community.
According to informed sources, Sobhi experienced acute cardiac symptoms while traveling on the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road. Authorities received an emergency report regarding a critical medical condition near Mohamed Hegazy Street, in front of the Grand Egyptian Museum, and security and emergency services immediately responded to the scene.
Upon examination, the patient was identified as Mohamed Sobhi, who was showing clear signs of a severe heart attack. He was promptly transported by a fully equipped ambulance to a private hospital, where he is currently receiving intensive medical care.
Medical sources said Sobhi is under close observation by a specialized medical team, though no official details have yet been released regarding his condition or prognosis.
The incident comes months after Sobhi made a televised appearance in November, marking his first public interview following a previous health setback. During that appearance, he addressed false rumors that had circulated at the time regarding his death, expressing frustration over the spread of unverified information and its emotional toll on his family.
Sobhi said the rumors had been particularly distressing for his relatives, noting that his granddaughter was deeply affected after encountering misleading reports online.
In earlier statements, the veteran actor had spoken openly about a difficult health ordeal caused by a rare virus, describing the treatment as physically exhausting despite the illness lasting for a limited period. He said the condition had recurred more than once, leading to extreme fatigue and prompting a profound reassessment of his outlook on life.
One of Egypt’s most influential cultural figures, Mohamed Sobhi has played a pivotal role in shaping modern Egyptian and Arab theater over several decades. He is widely recognized for combining artistic innovation with social and political commentary, using theater as a tool for public awareness and cultural enlightenment.
Only recently, Sobhi was honored at the opening ceremony of the 16th Arab Theatre Festival, held in Cairo at the Cairo Opera House. The tribute celebrated his long artistic career and his lasting contributions to the development of Arab theater.
As news of his hospitalization spread, messages of support and well wishes poured in from fellow artists, cultural institutions, and admirers across Egypt and the Arab world, reflecting the deep respect and affection he commands as a towering figure in regional performing arts.
Egypt Daily News wished actor Mohamed Sobhi a good and speedy recovery.
