Egypt Daily News – The head of the European Union Military Committee said that it is logical to deploy forces from EU countries on the island of Greenland, following the announcement of the US President’s interest in purchasing the island belonging to Denmark.
“It is completely logical to think about deploying soldiers from the European Union in Greenland in the future and not only have the presence of American troops there as is the case until now.” He added that such a step ultimately requires a political decision from the union.
It is noteworthy that the European Union Military Committee is the highest military body in the Union, but its role is limited to advice, as the European Union does not have its own army.
The NATO, led by the United States, is the only military force of the European Union.
Briger pointed to the strategic importance of Greenland, which is a region of Denmark outside the European Union, stressing that both Europeans and the United States have common interests in the island, especially with regard to natural resources and its distinctive geographical location.
The Austrian general also expressed his hope that the United States, as a member of the United Nations, will respect the sanctity of the borders, as stipulated in the United Nations Charter, in reference to the American statements
Earlier, US President Donald Trump posted a map on his page on Truth Social, in which Greenland appears alongside Canada and the United States in the same color. “It is necessary for the United States to own Greenland (the largest island in the world, which has self -rule under Danish sovereignty),” Trump said in late December 2024.
On the same day, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mutti Porob Igidi, responded to Trump’s words, saying that Greenland “is not for sale and will never be sold.”
Poll: The people of Greenland want to take Trump’s offer and join the USA
According to a poll conducted by the Patriot Polling Foundation on Sunday, 57.3% of participants agree with Greenland becoming part of the United States, while only 37.4% opposed the potential accession process, and 5.3% “undecided” about this step.
The poll indicated that this is the first time that the group has conducted an opinion poll outside the United States. It was also made during a visit by Donald Trump Jr., the president-elect’s son.
It is noteworthy that Greenland, with a population of only 57 thousand people, belongs to Denmark but enjoys self-rule. It also stores a wealth of minerals, oil and natural gas, but its slow development has made its economy dependent on fishing and annual subsidies from Denmark.
