Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the closure of a fraudulent website that was illegally selling tickets for visits to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), as part of efforts to protect visitors and prevent misleading online practices.
According to an official statement, the fake website was recently identified offering online ticket sales for the museum. Once the museum’s management became aware of the violation, immediate legal and regulatory measures were taken. The ministry coordinated with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and other relevant bodies, leading to the shutdown of the unauthorized platform.
The ministry stressed that the move reflects its commitment to safeguarding the rights of both Egyptian and international visitors, ensuring they receive reliable and secure services, and protecting them from online fraud or misinformation.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy highlighted the growing importance of digital awareness amid rapid technological advancement. He urged internet users to exercise caution when browsing websites and to verify that platforms are official and accredited before making reservations, payments, or sharing personal and sensitive information online.
In the same context, Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority, emphasized that Visit-GEM.com is the only official and authorized website for purchasing tickets to the Grand Egyptian Museum. He confirmed that no other websites or online platforms are licensed to sell tickets or provide booking services related to the museum.
Ghoneim called on visitors to rely exclusively on the official website to access accurate information and complete bookings safely. He warned against engaging with any other platforms claiming to sell entry tickets, noting that such sites are fraudulent and have no affiliation with the museum.
The museum administration also confirmed that it continues to closely monitor online activity to detect any websites falsely claiming association with the Grand Egyptian Museum. Legal action will be taken promptly against any violations to ensure visitor safety and preserve the museum’s reputation as it prepares to welcome increasing numbers of guests.
