Egypt Daily News – On Sunday, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities issued a statement regarding a video clip circulating on social media sites, which sparked widespread controversy after its publishers claimed that it documents “breaking stones” in the Great Pyramid (Khufu), in the Giza Pyramids area.

The Ministry confirmed that what appears in the video has nothing to do with any demolition work or change in the original stones of the pyramid.

It explained that the work shown in the video is related to “removing modern, non-archaeological building materials (mortar) that were placed decades ago to cover the electricity network used to light the pyramid.”

The statement noted that the Supreme Council of Antiquities “is currently removing these materials as part of a project aimed at modernizing the lighting network for the Great Pyramid, without these operations touching the body of the pyramid or any of its original stones.”

The Ministry stressed its “full commitment to protecting and preserving Egypt’s archaeological and cultural heritage,” calling on the public to “be careful in circulating information or disseminating it via social media sites, to avoid causing confusion or publishing incorrect news that may harm the efforts made to preserve archaeological sites.”
