Eight people from the same family were killed Friday after a passenger train collided with a private vehicle attempting to cross the railway tracks through an unauthorized passage in Suez Governorate, in one of the deadliest railway accidents in the area in recent years.
Authorities said all of the victims were occupants of the car, including five women, a man believed to have been driving the vehicle, and two children. No injuries were reported among passengers aboard the train.
The crash occurred on the Suez-Ismailia railway line in the El Geneina district, where the vehicle entered the tracks from what officials described as an illegal crossing point. The train struck the car with significant force, triggering a fire that engulfed the vehicle and spread to the front section of the locomotive.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene as flames and smoke rose above the railway line. Civil defense teams, firefighters and ambulances worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from reaching the train’s passenger carriages.
Railway authorities separated the locomotive from the rest of the train as a precautionary measure while rescue operations continued. Witnesses described scenes of devastation at the crash site, where emergency crews battled the fire before recovering the victims from the wreckage.
The eight bodies were transferred to the morgue at Suez Medical Complex, where they remain under the supervision of prosecutors investigating the circumstances of the accident. Railway officials also dispatched heavy equipment to clear the damaged locomotive and remove debris from the tracks in an effort to restore normal operations on the Suez-Ismailia line.
Preliminary information indicates that the collision occurred while the vehicle was attempting to cross the tracks outside designated railway crossings, a recurring safety challenge that has contributed to numerous fatal accidents across Egypt’s rail network.
Investigators have launched a formal inquiry to determine the exact sequence of events and establish whether additional factors contributed to the tragedy. The accident has cast a shadow over Suez Governorate, where residents expressed shock and grief after news emerged that eight members of the same vehicle had lost their lives in the collision.
Authorities continued efforts late Friday to fully reopen the railway line and complete the investigation into one of the region’s deadliest transportation accidents this year.
