A federal judge on Friday struck down a Trump administration policy that imposed sweeping immigration restrictions on applicants from 39 countries, ruling that the measures unlawfully disrupted immigration processes and left thousands of people facing prolonged uncertainty about their legal status in the United States.
The decision represents a significant setback for the administration’s immigration agenda and could affect a broad range of applications, including asylum requests, employment authorization documents, permanent residency applications, and naturalization proceedings.
In a sharply worded ruling, the judge criticized U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), finding that the agency had exceeded its authority and failed to follow requirements established under federal immigration law.
The court concluded that the policy effectively placed large numbers of immigrants into what it described as an “indeterminate legal limbo,” creating delays and obstacles that prevented applicants from obtaining decisions on cases that could determine whether they are allowed to remain in the country.
