Major gas find in the Western Desert is expected to strengthen Egypt’s energy security, reduce import costs, and support efforts to reverse declining domestic production.

Egypt has announced a significant new natural gas discovery in the Western Desert, with preliminary estimates indicating reserves of around 330 billion cubic feet of gas and 10 million barrels of crude oil and condensates, marking one of the most important energy finds in the region in recent years.

The discovery, revealed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, is being viewed as a major boost to Egypt’s energy sector at a time when the country is seeking to stabilize production and curb rising energy import costs amid volatile global markets.

Turning Point for Egypt’s Gas Sector

Mahmoud Nagi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, described the discovery as a genuine turning point that will help strengthen Egypt’s hydrocarbon reserves and support the government’s broader strategy to restore growth in domestic energy production.

According to Nagi, every new discovery contributes to national efforts aimed at halting the decline in output, achieving production stability, and eventually returning to sustained growth.

The announcement comes as Egypt and many other countries continue to face challenges linked to high global energy prices, economic pressures, and growing demand for fuel and electricity.

Largest Discovery for Agiba in 15 Years

The newly discovered field is considered the largest find made by Agiba Petroleum Company in the Western Desert in the past 15 years.

Officials said the breakthrough was made possible through the use of advanced exploration technologies, including modern seismic surveys and the reprocessing of geological data using three-dimensional imaging techniques. The application of these technologies enabled geologists to identify promising reserves in an area that many experts had previously considered largely exhausted.

The success of the project highlights a growing shift within Egypt’s petroleum sector toward digital technologies, advanced data analytics, and modern exploration methods designed to unlock untapped resources in mature fields.

Reducing Energy Imports and Strengthening Security

The ministry believes the new field could play an important role in reducing Egypt’s energy import bill by supplying additional volumes of locally produced gas and petroleum products.

With the discovery located only 10 kilometers from existing technical and economic facilities, development costs are expected to be lower and production could be connected to existing infrastructure relatively quickly compared with more remote projects.

Energy officials say such discoveries directly contribute to strengthening national energy security by ensuring a more reliable supply of fuel for electricity generation, industry, transportation, and other sectors that depend on stable energy availability.

Meeting Rising Summer Demand

Egypt’s gas consumption traditionally rises sharply during the summer months as electricity demand increases due to air-conditioning use.

According to ministry figures, the country currently consumes approximately 7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day during peak summer periods, while domestic production stands at around 4 billion cubic feet daily.

Officials noted, however, that Egypt possesses additional supply sources and infrastructure capacity, including gas import facilities, liquefied natural gas (LNG) resources, and processing units connected to the national gas grid, helping the country manage seasonal demand pressures.

Nagi said government preparations for the summer season began early and included efforts to diversify gas supplies and secure the necessary LNG volumes to meet expected consumption levels.

Part of a Broader Production Recovery Strategy

The latest discovery forms part of Egypt’s wider strategy to increase exploration activity, attract investment, and maximize production from existing and newly identified fields. Authorities have increasingly focused on deploying advanced technologies across exploration, production, and operational services in an effort to boost domestic output and improve recovery rates.

The Western Desert remains one of Egypt’s most important hydrocarbon-producing regions, and officials believe continued investment and technological innovation could lead to further discoveries that strengthen the country’s position as a key energy producer in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa.

With preliminary reserves estimated at 330 billion cubic feet of gas and 10 million barrels of oil and condensates, the new Western Desert discovery represents a potentially significant addition to Egypt’s energy portfolio and a positive development for the country’s long-term energy security ambitions.
