A 26-year-old Egyptian man from Gharbia Governorate has died while being held in an Italian detention facility after an irregular migration journey to Europe, sparking calls for an official investigation and the repatriation of his body.

Questions are mounting over the death of a young Egyptian migrant inside an Italian detention center, with his family demanding urgent intervention from Egyptian authorities amid conflicting accounts and a lack of official information about how he died.

The victim, identified by relatives as 26-year-old Abdel Baki Mohamed from the village of Mit Rekha in Gharbia’s Zefta district, had recently left Egypt in an attempt to reach Europe through an irregular migration route across the Mediterranean.

According to family friends, the young man had spent years working in the agricultural trade alongside relatives, helping distribute and market crops, particularly tomatoes. Like many young Egyptians seeking better economic prospects abroad, he reportedly decided to leave for Italy in search of employment opportunities.

What happened after his arrival remains the subject of growing uncertainty.

Residents familiar with the case said Abdel Baki encountered legal complications shortly after reaching Italian territory and was taken into custody by local authorities. He was reportedly being held while officials reviewed his immigration status and legal situation.

Days later, his family received the news that he had died while in detention.

The announcement sent shockwaves through his hometown, where neighbors and relatives gathered to offer condolences while trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding his final days.

No official medical report has been released, and Italian authorities have yet to publicly disclose the cause of death. The absence of detailed information has fueled speculation among residents, with some circulating unverified claims that the young man may have been subjected to violence while in custody.

Those claims, however, have not been confirmed by any official source.

Family members say their primary concern is obtaining clear answers about what happened inside the detention facility and ensuring a transparent investigation into the incident.

Relatives have appealed to Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Migration and to the Egyptian Embassy in Rome to communicate with Italian authorities, establish the circumstances of the death, and facilitate the return of the body to Egypt.

The case has also drawn renewed attention to the dangers facing migrants who undertake unauthorized journeys across the Mediterranean, often risking detention, exploitation, or death in pursuit of economic opportunities abroad.

Until Italian authorities issue a formal explanation, the death of Abdel Baki Mohamed remains surrounded by unanswered questions, leaving a grieving family waiting for clarity and a village searching for the truth behind a journey that began with hopes for a better future and ended in tragedy thousands of miles from home.
