Egypt Daily News – In a tragic and unexpected turn of events, Major General Essam El-Din Abdullah, the newly appointed security director for Egypt’s New Valley Governorate, died on Sunday in a car accident just hours after his official appointment. The incident occurred as he was traveling to assume his new post in the southwestern part of the country.
According to official sources, the accident took place along the western desert highway, just before the Samalout axis in Minya Governorate in Upper Egypt. Authorities received an emergency report of a vehicle overturning and quickly dispatched a police unit to the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash resulted in the death of Major General Abdullah, whose appointment had been announced the day before as part of a broader reshuffle within Egypt’s Ministry of Interior. Two police officers accompanying him were also injured in the incident and have been transported to Samalout Specialized Hospital for medical treatment.
The late officer’s death casts a shadow over what had been intended as a new chapter in regional security leadership. The New Valley Governorate, one of Egypt’s largest and most remote territories, is known for its vast desert expanses and strategic importance.
Major General Abdullah’s appointment was part of a nationwide shake-up within the Ministry of Interior, approved just a day earlier by Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfik. The restructuring included the assignment of new security directors in several provinces, as well as changes in the leadership of the National Security Sector and the Officers Affairs Department.
As tributes pour in from across the security establishment, questions remain regarding the circumstances of the accident. Authorities have not yet released further details about the cause of the vehicle’s overturn, but investigations are ongoing.
