Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, linking the decision to escalating Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon. Tehran described the move as a response to what it called violations of a ceasefire and continued regional instability.
Iran’s Joint Military Command said the closure represents the “first step” in its response to the situation in Lebanon, according to state-affiliated media. Officials warned that further escalation could lead to additional measures.
The announcement comes amid rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, which has already disrupted planned diplomatic negotiations. Reports indicated that international talks involving the United States and Iran were delayed due to the worsening security situation.
Media sources said preparatory meetings scheduled in Switzerland were postponed after renewed fighting in the region. Iranian state media also reported that officials were en route before the discussions were suspended.
Iran also issued guidance requiring prior authorization for any vessel attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a critical global energy route, making any restrictions highly significant for international oil shipping.
Maritime data indicates that vessels have recently used multiple navigation routes within the strait, including paths near Iranian and Omani waters. Some ships reportedly continued transiting the area despite heightened tensions.
It is still unclear whether the announcement will result in a full disruption of shipping traffic through the strait. Analysts expect shipping companies to increase caution while monitoring further developments in the region.
